Big Cats

Rich colours, hypnotic eyes and the memory of a painting I'd seen at school inspired me to paint a series of my own big cats. I loved working with the strong contrast and bright colours in their beautiful markings. Seeing the eyes come alive was a highlight for me. Click on the images to see them up close. The paintings shown here are all large, over 36" tall. I used palette knives for the texture.

Portraits

Fresh out of university, I was keen to start painting portraits again. These three examples were much more expressive than the commissions I was doing at the time. The first two are quite large, around 5' tall, and the third is smaller at 3' square. In the first and last examples, you can still see much of the initial underpainting. It was at this time that I first started to explore working with pallet knives. 

Abstracts

This series of abstracts was a continuation of my work at university. The paintings are large (over 3' tall and around 5' wide) and would begin without planning. I built up layers of paint with hard edges and smooth gradients in an attempt to produce fractal like patterns similar to those found in nature and maths. These works are inspired by Haida, Maori, Celtic and Islamic art. I love the darkness and depth of Prussian Blue.
